Software Package

The School of Engineering provides a software package for students that includes most of what you will need for this course. More information can be found here: http://engineering.nyu.edu/services/information-technology-systems/laptop.

Unsupported Platforms

EG1003 explicitly does not offer support for any of the following platforms:

  • OpenOffice/LibreOffice
  • Google Docs
  • iWork: Pages, Numbers, and Keynote
  • Linux/Unix
  • ChromeOS
  • Mobile Devices: iOS/Android/Windows Phone

Use of any of these above mentioned platforms may cause formatting issues and submission troubles. Students may be penalized for these incompatibilities.

Lab PCs and NYU VCL

The PCs in JAB 573, 574, 576, and 577 are equipped with all the software you will need for the course. Access to these PCs are allowed during Open Lab sessions.

NYU offers a Virtual Computing Lab which has some of the software required by the course installed.

Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office is provided as part of the software package. Alternatively, as of the writing of this page, students may register and download Office for free at http://www.office.com/getoffice365 with their nyu.edu email address. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook are included in the Office suite.

Microsoft Project

Microsoft Project is only available for the Windows platform. Mac users may install virtualization software or dual-boot with Windows to install Microsoft Project.

The Laptop Help Desk provides Microsoft Project for current EG1003 students at no additional cost. They are located in RH339 and their hours of operation are Mon – Fri, 9:00 AM – 4:45 PM.

A trial version of Microsoft Project is available here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-project-professional-2013

Students have used GanttProject with much success as an alternative for OS X, but we do not guarantee that this software is free of malware. The NYU Tandon School of Engineering requires students with Macbooks to be able to dual-boot Windows or run Windows under virtualization.

Mindstorms NXT/EV3

Mindstorms is available here: http://www.lego.com/en-us/mindstorms/downloads. Please note which version you need as both NXT and EV3 are available on the page.

Advanced sensors such as gryo and ultrasonic sensors require additional software to work with Mindstorms EV3; this is also available further down on the page.
